Tooth removal

A tooth is removed when it can't be repaired, because it is broken below the gum, loose from gum disease or badly decayed.

What happens

Usually one visit for a simple removal.

  1. 01

    Step 1: Exam and options

She shows you the tooth, says whether it can be saved and gives you the fee in writing.

  2. 02

    Step 2: Numbing

She numbs the area and checks it before she begins.

  3. 03

    Step 3: The removal

You feel pressure and pushing. She tells you what she is doing as she goes.

  4. 04

    Step 4: Aftercare

We give you written instructions and a number to call.

If a tooth is hard to reach or broken deep below the gum, Dr. Loera says so and refers you to an oral surgeon.

Comfort, choices and care

  • Comfort

We use a local anesthetic. Raise a hand and we stop. If you want IV or general sedation, we refer you to a dentist who offers it.

  • Replacing the tooth

A gap can let the teeth beside it shift. The options are an implant, a bridge, a partial denture or leaving the gap. We go through each.

  • Risks and aftercare

Bleeding, swelling and soreness are expected for a few days. A dry socket, where the healing clot is lost, can hurt after a few days. Call us for that, for a fever, or for bleeding that won't stop.

  • How it's billed

The removal is quoted before we start. The fee is in your written estimate before we start.

Questions about tooth removal

Can I eat afterward?

Soft, cool food once the numbness wears off. We give you written instructions.

Can I have an implant right away?

Sometimes, but often the site heals first. Dr. Loera tells you what suits your case.

What if I'm anxious?

Tell us. We walk you through each step before it happens, and we stop when you ask.

Will I miss work?

Many people go back the next day. Ask us when you book.
